I believe it was made so it's not automatically embedded so that people who link videos in their signature, it only appears as a link.
To embed a youtube video:
[ media ] exact link of the youtube video including http [ /media ]
Make sure to get rid of the spaces.

To make a video appear as an attachment, highlight the youtube link, and click on the "Insert Media" icon (the sixth icon after the smile emoticon).
I made it like that so that people know that they have a choice of embedding them or not. Sometimes a poster might want to post a youtube video and make it appear as a link (especially if there are some slightly unsuitable kind of stuff in the video). So, I think it'll be good to embed them only when people want to embed them, otherwise they stay as a link.
If there are any strong objections against that, then we will change it back to automatic embedding. But I think it's good like this for now. I already told you how to embed them. And like white-rose said, make sure to get rid of any spaces between the link and the media tags.
