I'm sick of fanatical biologists saying that the coccyx is just a left over from evolution and has no purpose in humans.
I think that this is a gross error as the biologists don't have complete knowledge and thus can't say this.

Anyways, as Muslims we believe in the following Hadiths on the topic which give us the purpose of the coccyx(at least in terms of the greater perspective):

Abu Huraira reported that The Prophet (PBUH) said: “All what of son of Adam will (be consumed) by the earth except the coccyx from which he was created and from which he will be resurrected ” Reported by Albukhari, Al Nassaii, Abu Daoud, Ibn Majah and Ahmad in his Mousnad and Malek in his Mouattaa.

As was reported by Abu Huraira the prophet (PBUH) said: “There is a bone in the Son Of Adam that the earth will never eat. They said what is it Oh Prophet of Allah? He said: It is the coccyx” Reported by Albukhari, Al Nassaii, Abu Daoud, Ibn Majah, Ahmad in his book “al Mousnad” and Malek in his book “Al Mouattaa”.

Coccyx is not just "leftovers" - I also don't like that "scientists" have that attitude of randomness about coccyx. But yeah, it is hard to define what exactly the purpose of coccyx is. Coccyx is part of columna vertebralis and is a bone that consists of 3-5 vertebrae fused together (which they do in puberty and later). Although the fused vertebrae of coccyx can't rotate and such, like the vertebrae in cervicales, thoracicae and lumbales - because humans don't have tales and need movement in coccyx, there is actually a tiny bit of movement in the fused vertebrae of coccyx anyway. But it's absolutely minimal.

To coccyx, very important muscles are attached. Muscles that protect the entire back when a person falls on his behind, for instance (because they work as absorbers to the pressure/waves from falling). So really, coccyx does have a purpos. It'd be different if no muscle or nerve was attached to it, then one could talk about uselessness.

My Islamic Studies teacher told me that people will be resurrected from a single cell in the coccyx....she read it in a science journal or something..

So whats up with the detective coat? You going into forensics or something?

And what were you trying to find?

Forensics is a part of our course, some would argue the worst...

I was just asking my teach a bit more about the coccyx...

Jafri is going to med school inshaAllah, then he's getting his doctorate. What a genius. Pharmacy? PSHT.

Astera - you sound like quite the science geek! I am proud.

I've read that hadith before too. One of my teachers once told me that the coccyx contains the precursor cells for all the organs of the human body(don't think this is proven by science though).

Also, one cell is more than enough to re-create the entire human being. Not to mention Allah SWT doesn't even need that one cell, subhanAllah.
